Tinctorial Power (Tinting Strength)

April 28th, 2006 Leave a comment Go to comments

The power of a particular pigment to transmit its hue to a mix.

Colours such as Prussian blue are very high in tinting strength, making them very economical to use, little being needed in mixes with other colours. In contrast, cobalt violet has a low tinting strength. A lot of paint is needed to make even a modest pool of colour and in mixes it is easily overpowered.
