Fat Over Lean

April 28th, 2006

When painting in layers in oil painting, each layer needs to be higher in oil content than the preceding one to prevent sinking in and other paint film defects such as cracking. This is sometimes (erroneously) believed to mean “thick over thin”. Although this is also good practice in oil painting, thin, oil-rich glazes can successfully be applied over layers of greater thickness that are leaner in oil.
