Painting Medium

A specially made liquid additive to be mixed with a type of paint to improve certain characteristics – e.g. a glazing medium.

Pastel

A painting medium based on sticks of pigment, china clay and chalk, bound with the minimum binder. These are then used in the manner of chalks to make paintings. The pigment is held by the interstices of the paper or board on which the pastel is used.

Permanence

The notional effective lifespan of a substance. In painting terms, the lifespan of paintings, pigments, varnishes, before they deteriorate. Often the permanence of particular colours are tested and rated in terms of lightfastness.

Primary Colours

Colours that cannot be mixed from other colours ie. red, yellow and blue.

It can also mean colours that are mono-pigments, such as viridian green, which is a created green, not a binary mix of blue and yellow

Priming

A paint-resiting layer that is interposed between the painting surface and the paint. It has two functions: the first is to prevent deterioration of either paint or painting surface by contamination from the other. The second, to give a good key for the paint.
