Drybrushing

The method by which a very small amount of paint is deposited over the surface of the support in order to leave a broken trail of colour. The term comes from the fact that when using this technique the brush is almost ‘dry’ of paint.

Split Complementaries

These are not quite complementaries. For example, the true complementary of blue is orange, so a warm yellow would be its split complementary.

Broken Colour

When colours are applied next to each other in small amounts, so that from a distance they appear to mix. This can result in a shimmering effect which can be used very successfully to capture the qualities of light.
